February is a jam-packed month for cultural activities in the Bunbury region. With everything from documentary film to international food and country music on offer, you'll find something to enjoy that will give you a taste of life in our beautiful area.
The Summer Film Festival has been running since the middle of January, but it's continuing through to April at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre (BREC). An array of brilliant global cinema is being screened, including 'I, Daniel Blake', which took home the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year. Homegrown coming-of-age flick 'Girl Asleep' and the indigenous doco 'Servant Or Slave' are also on the schedule.
Bunbury's Fringe Festival kicks off on February 3 and includes workshops, comedy shows and musical performances for all tastes. 2017 is the first year that the festival has been held and it promises to showcase Bunbury's quirkier side. This is certainly one to add to your calendar if you're after something a little unique.
The Free Summer Concert Series runs every second Sunday during February and March at Bunbury's City Council Gardens. The event was set up to showcase local musical talent and this year's Series features local men's choir the Bunbury Men of Song. The Men pride themselves on their "authentic Australian voice", which they work into a repertoire that incorporates everything from rock 'n' roll to classical tunes and popular musical numbers.
Boyup Brook is a small town about 90 minutes' drive from Bunbury. Each year, it comes to life with music-loving campers and glampers for the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, one of WA's largest music/camping festivals. It's held from February 16-19 and is a true community event run by dedicated local volunteers. Even if you aren't an ardent country music fan, you'll definitely appreciate the lively atmosphere amidst Boyup Brook's beautiful bushland surrounds.
The community of Bunbury prides itself on its openness and appreciation of diversity. The South West Multicultural Festival has been going strong for the past 10 years and is returning on February 25 this year. Everyone is welcome to participate in the festivities, or you can simply turn up to check out all the events and stalls. There'll be a flag parade, dancing, music and – what we're looking forward to the most – plenty of delicious food from all over the world!
If you're thinking of buying in Bunbury, you could be enjoying all of these festivals and plenty of other events throughout the year.
