Getting around by bike could soon become much easier for residents of real estate in Dalyellup, as the WA state government reveals plans for extra cycling funding. A workshop was held in the state earlier this year, which identified various opportunities to promote two-wheeled transport.
In order for the plans to go ahead, the Department of Transport is soon expected to come to an agreement with local governments. This will allow them to provide a wide range of cycling infrastructure, including bike boulevards on local roads and better connections to stations.
"Focus groups looked at opportunities for greater separation for cyclists on arterial roads, creating lower speed environments on local road bike routes, improving connections to train stations, schools and hospital precincts and looking at better design standards for roundabouts," revealed transport minister Dean Nalder.
The WA government has already recognised that pedestrians and cyclists will need to be separated in some parts of the state. It is also taking a closer look at how to educate adults and children in the state so they can be safer while travelling by bicycle when living in property in Dalyellup and other areas.
Earlier this month, the City of Bunbury announced that it was looking at ways to make the area more pedestrian-friendly. The Community Access Committee has outlined its vision that would make Bunbury the Most Accessible Regional City in Australia (MARCIA) by 2020.
UK researcher Dr Rodney Tolley has suggested that greater emphasis is placed on walking and cycling in the region, including establishing more pedestrian-friendly areas for shopping precincts.
Among the core criteria that Bunbury will need to meet in order to become MARCIA includes greater access to public spaces, greater disability awareness and providing technology that will help enhance accessibility. Dr Tolley suggested that efforts should be made beyond physically improving how people enter and use spaces.
