Live your Game of Thrones fantasy at the Balingup Medieval Carnivale

By Kevin Kelly

This August, an hour's drive out of Bunbury, you'll hear the resounding clanging of broadswords on chest plates, and the eldritch chanting of Western Australia's own warlocks. The Balingup Medieval Carnivale is the prime destination for all owners of real estate in Bunbury who follow HBO's Game of Thrones.

Now in its 21st year, the Carnivale returns for the last weekend of August, and promises to be more fun and fiery than ever before. Here are just a few of the great things you'll see at this year's event.

Costumes

All vendors at the Carnivale are required to "medieval" their stalls, be it decorating with custom heraldry or dressing the part. Entertainers dressed as bards and jesters will parade around, and you're invited to immerse yourself in the historical festivities by renting your own costume on site, or booking in advance.

Over 300 different costumes are available for people of all ages and sizes. If your fantasy is to be a lord or lady, a peasant or sorcerer, or the bravest knight from Bunbury, the costume hire at Balingup Medieval Carnivale is there to make your dreams a reality.

Combat

Relive the excitement of the Battle of Castle Black with live combat between WA's bravest knights. Australian knight Tyler Ross-Clarke first saw historical combat at the Carnivale, and ever since has made his own weapons and armour. He travelled to Spain earlier this year to fight in the Battle of the Nations, the world's premier historical battles championship.

At the Carnivale, you can witness thrilling live action combat performed by trained fighters clad in chainmail and plate. The speed with which these experts can move in such heavy armour will astound you!

Combustion

The highly anticipated climax of the Carnivale is the 'Burning of the Dragon'. On Saturday night, amongst the food and laughter, pyrotechnic performers will set the stage alight (not literally!) and local collective of Celtic musicians, the Jarrah Celts, will get your feet moving. The evening will culminate in the burning of an enormous dragon statue, which is sure to be a sight to behold.

If you consider yourself the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, why not find your own little slice of Kings' Landing right here in Bunbury. Talk to one of our real estate agents today.
