SHIFT Youth Festival 2018 is almost here

By Kevin Kelly

The city of Bunbury is a great place to live if you have kids. Alongside the many permanent options for entertaining them, there are also youth-focused events peppered throughout the calendar year. One such event coming this weekend as part of National Youth Week is the SHIFT festival.

What is SHIFT festival?

SHIFT is a free youth-oriented festival that will run from 1-7 p.m. this Sunday, the 15th, at Koombana Bay. It'll feature music, food, and a range of youth-friendly activities.

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan had only positive things to say about the event.

"Our young people are an important demographic and the future of Bunbury – this festival is about them and for them," he said.

The festival received a $15,000 funding boost from Healthway, a government body that promotes activities that encourage healthy lifestyles. This is expected to bring the show to another level.

A huge headline act

Headlining the festival is indie-rock band British India. The band came to prominence in 2007 out of Melbourne's underground scene. Since that time, the band has released four Top 10 albums and is enjoying touring on their latest release "Forgetting the Future". It's an album that's raw, explosive and indicative of the band's re-kindled passion and vigour. Lead vocalist and guitarist Declan Melia said the band was "tapping into the same ferocity you feel when you first start writing songs as a band". No doubt they'll be playing a number of tracks from "Forgetting the Future", as well as old classics, during their set.

There'll also be appearances from Wooly Mammoth, an alternative band from Perth, as well as a number of other acts including Mitchell Martin, Zoe Dellaca and the Daisy Chains.

Not just music

You won't just find great music at SHIFT festival – there'll be a whole bunch of other things to see too. A pop-up skate park, market stalls and food trucks, beach volleyball, sumo suits, bubble soccer, stand-up paddle boarding and loads more beach activities will have your day full to the brim!

It's community events like this that make Bunbury a fantastic place to live – there's always something on, no matter your age! If you would like more information on buying or renting real estate in Bunbury, get in touch with one of the members of our expert team today.
