Valentine’s Day kicks off with a bang in Bunbury

By Kevin Kelly

The City of Bunbury's Love Where You Live Summer Cinema Series bursts into action on Valentine's Day this year with a modern classic.

Australian director Baz Luhrmann, who directed such films as The Great Gatsby, Australia and Moulin Rouge!, filmed Romeo + Juliet in 1996 – the headline film for this event. It could be the perfect way to spend a night under the stars with your significant other.

The Summer Cinema Series aims to showcase various parts of the city and build attraction for the area, which can only be good news for real estate in Bunbury.

Romeo, Oh Romeo

Held in the Council Gardens from 7 p.m., Romeo + Juliet will start your night's proceedings off the right way.

Starring six-time Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo, four-time Golden Globe winner Claire Danes as Juliet and comedian Paul Rudd, Mr Luhrmann set the screen alight with this modern adaptation of the Shakespearean classic that was nominated for an Oscar for Best Set Decoration in 1997.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays this romantic role a year before he starred in Titanic. Arguably one of the best actors of this generation, he is sure to keep viewers hooked throughout the screening, even teenagers might learn a thing or two from his swooning performance.

Sweethearts abundant in Bunbury parks

The event will take place all around Bunbury, allowing areas in the city to celebrate their little slice of paradise and the stunning park areas that give such a warm community feel.

"Last year's Love Where You Live series was a big success with hundreds of people attending screenings in the beautiful surrounds of our local parks," said Bunbury mayor Gary Brennan.

"It is events such as these which help to reinvigorate a sense of belonging in the community," Mr Brennan added.

With the event looking to be a success again this year, real estate in the city may receive a welcome boost, adding value to Bunbury rentals as well.
