Western Australia’s best wineries

By Kevin Kelly

When you buy real estate in Bunbury, you're surrounding yourself with some of the best vineyards in Australia and the world. So get your tastebuds tannin-ready by checking out these top Western Australian wineries, all within an hour and a half's drive of your Bunbury home.

1) Leeuwin Estate

In 1980, only one year after releasing its first commercial vintage, Leeuwin Estate managed to catch the eye of the world's wine scene when Decanter Magazine gave the "Art Series" Chardonnay its highest recommendation.

Now exporting to 30 countries, you can enjoy these fantastic wines right where they're made by driving just an hour and 20 minutes south of Bunbury. Be sure to visit the art gallery while you're there, where you can see a number of works commissioned specifically for the estate. If you get bored of the wine (though somehow we don't think you will), there are also regular concerts and events, as well as an award-winning restaurant where you can line the stomach with a bite to eat.

The restaurant and cellar door are open 10am – 5pm daily and for dinner on Saturdays.

2) Wise Wine

Want ocean views while you sip on a glass of boutique rose? Look no further than Wise Wine vineyard, just an hour and 10 minutes drive from Bunbury. Using sustainable farming practices to produce fruit with unique characteristics, the winemakers at Wise Wine believe in minimal intervention to create beverages with distinct regional flavours.

Located at the northern edge of the famous Margaret River Wine Region, there's not only wine but also art and sculptures to feast your eyes on at this amazing vineyard. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week and for dinner on Friday and Saturday, while the tavern and bistro is open for dinner Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

3) Hamelin Bay Wines

Family-run Hamelin Bay Wines is home to one of the best-placed vineyards for wine growing on the Margaret River. The white grapes are found on the cool easterly slope, while the reds are situated on the warmer north-facing slope just by the cellar door. From the beginning, these wines have won a variety of awards thanks to the gravel soils and moderate microclimate.

Open daily from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm for wine tasting and 12 pm to 3 pm for lunch, you can also have dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
