HIA: More Housing Needed for Growing Population

By Kevin Kelly

Greater availability of houses to rent in Bunbury and other parts of the country will become necessary over the coming years as the Australian population is on the rise.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) responded to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, showing the nation’s population reached 23.13 million in the middle of this year.

In the year to June 2013 alone, an additional 407,000 people were living in Australia, marking a growth rate of 1.8 per cent.

HIA economist Geordan Murray said action needs to be taken sooner or later to ensure people are able to find suitable housing in Australia.

"To date, there has not been any commensurate boost to the supply of new housing. It is time for policy makers to acknowledge the imminent policy challenge that this situation poses," he commented.

A particular rise has been seen in net overseas migration, which increased by 8.9 per cent in 2012-13 – as a result, this factor contributed 1.1 per cent to overall annual population growth.

Natural increase, on the other hand, contributed 0.7 percentage points to the overall figure.
