Renovating your kitchen? Consider these 4 improvements

By Kevin Kelly

Whether you have plans to sell your home or stay in it for the next few decades, a kitchen renovation can go a long way towards making it the focal point of a house.

It's time to think beyond simply upgrading your appliances. The following improvements vary in price, but can have a real positive visual impact on the final product:

1. Start with the basics

If you're just looking to spruce things up a bit, a new coat of paint could be all you need. It can be difficult to decide on a colour if you have an open floor plan because all of the walls should match, but property owners with a closed layout should consider going with something more vibrant. Doing so can breathe new life into the heart of the household.

Similarly, lighting plays a big part in how a kitchen is perceived. Try changing out dull lightbulbs to some that are a little brighter, or vice versa. If you're doing a major overhaul of the home, bringing in more natural light could be the way to go.

2. Look down

You'd be surprised at how much of an improvement new floors can make. They're essential when modernising, but can also improve quality of life drastically. Some spills, scuffs and messes can stick to certain surfaces more than others.

"Flooring is a very important part of a kitchen remodel, and there is a dizzying array of options available to the homeowner," Jane Toland, principal at Tolhouse Design, told Business Insider. "A simple floor colour change is all that is needed, in say, a rich brown shade or a trendy grey stain."

3. Time for a change

Home owners looking for a serious change in their layout design should consider swapping out the tables for an island with granite or tile. Not only does it give your kitchen a whole new look, but over time it becomes home base for family time.

4. Clear the clutter

Storage plays a large part in how open your kitchen feels. Cabinets can suffocate space in smaller areas and at times even be obtrusive. There are a couple of ways to change things up:

  • If you can't lose the space, try repainting them to give a fresh new look.
  • Take a few cabinets out in strategic areas, like lesser used spots, and install shelving to create an open design without losing storage.
  • Meet both recommendations halfway by removing the doors but keeping the cabinets intact.
