Three hot summer renovations ideas for your home

By Kevin Kelly

Western Australia's in for scorching temperatures above the normal average this summer, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. That means you've got 25 to 30 degree days and balmy summer nights to look forward to as 2018 rolls around.

To really enjoy this glorious season why not take your Bunbury home to the next level with our favourite summer renovations.

Beat the heat with energy efficient fittings

Staying cool and comfortable at home can be tough in the midst of a blazing Bunbury summer, but by making a few energy efficient changes to your home you can make it easier.

For a start – windows exposed to full sun can generate as much heat as a radiator, according to Your Energy Savings. So where possible add outdoor shades to North or West facing windows, and pull the blinds during the hottest part of the day.

It's also worth checking if your home is insulated and if your windows are well sealed and double glazed. Improving these things can help keep the chilled air in, reducing cooling costs and keeping you comfortable all summer long.

Upgrade the outdoor kitchen

The average outdoor kitchen in Bunbury usually consists of a barbie on the deck, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, with just a little work you can turn your outdoor cooking area into a fully functional kitchen making your summer barbecues even better.

A few things to consider adding to your outdoor kitchen include:

  • A covered beverage and ingredient fridge and icemaker.
  • A Food prep bench next to the grill.
  • A sun shade covering the barbecue.
  • Lighting for cooking after dark.

Whatever you do, make sure you use appliances and materials meant for exterior use. When designing the space, position your kitchen next to an outdoor sitting area, and near your home's living spaces so that it feels like an extension of your indoor areas.

Turn on the indoor/outdoor flow

The most important thing about summer in Bunbury is that you get outside and enjoy it. Improving your home's indoor/outdoor flow is a brilliant way to make that easier, with just a few small renovations.

We love the idea of a servery window opening the kitchen up to the deck area, allowing for easy serving of drinks and food direct to outdoor diners. If that sounds like too much work, how about simply adding outdoor lighting to make the space more inviting after dark, or even extending your deck to provide more usable area.
